Hi, I'm Jeanne-Marie Derrick, I sculpt and paint in a variety of mediums. I like to experiment with different ways of expressing myself. Sometimes I’m drawn to make work that is more traditional and other times more exploratory and provocative. I suppose you can say that my work analyzes the world through multiple lens’. One of those lens’ is comedy. I like to infuse a little frivolity and sarcasm into some of my more resent pieces. Lately I’ve been using materials that are otherwise discarded and considered garbage like; plastic containers, rubber bands, safety pins, tree bark…combined with subject matters that have a tongue in cheek commentary.

I like the experience of change as a motivator. Changing mediums, changing styles, changing philosophies, changing minds, changing influences, places, ideas, tastes, even a favorite color. Change is happening all the time, time is happening and change is the result. Mental flexibility and agility affords an opportunity to exercise the challenges of change. I encourage viewers to explore their imagination with a fresh, free mind and look at my art as something new, maybe even something you never thought of or felt before.

Making art is a privilege, each piece is a story, a little memoir, infused with whatever I’m experiencing that leaves an impression worth manifesting.

Painting, whether I’m working with oils, acrylic, ink or watercolor, it’s all thought-provoking and intriguing. Even if it’s just sidewalk chalk there is the opportunity to express creativity. Sculpture materials can be anything from clay, wood, metal, plastic, paper, rock… the world at large, really. As long as it has form, it can be sculpted.

The world is inspiring. People are inspiring. Nature is inspiring. Art is a way of connecting inner thoughts and desires with outer life.

My art is an example of a spectrum of human creativity, blending the profound and playful with inner reflection. Each piece contains inspiration and is a salute to beauty and the complexity of life in all its infinite forms.
